Terrorism Fight Will Take Time and Allies, Says Rumsfeld
By Gerry J. Gilmore, American Forces Press Service.
Washington D.C. -- (AFPS) September 16, 2001 -- America's battle to stamp out terrorism will take both time and allies, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said today.
Eradicating the terrorism that spawned the horrific Sept. 11 attacks on the New York World Trade Center and the Pentagon "will take a broad, sustained effort" that will require both diplomatic and military means, Rumsfeld told reporters here.
"And, it will take time," he added. "It is not a matter of days or weeks. It is years."
America's struggle against terrorism also requires the support of its people, Rumsfeld remarked, and help from the country's traditional allies, like Britain. Assistance will also be required from some countries that have helped terrorists in the past, he added.
Unlike terrorist organizations, which normally have no fixed hard assets, many countries that harbor terrorists "do in fact have armies and navies and air forces," Rumsfeld pointed out, "and they do have capitals and they do have high-value targets.
"There are a number of countries that are harboring terrorists. They in some cases facilitate them, in some cases finance, in other cases just tolerate (terrorists)," he continued. "We are going to need them to stop tolerating terrorists."
