Command Announces Public Affairs Awards

Langley Air Force Base, Virginia -- February 3, 2001 (ACCNS) -- Air Combat Command has announced the winners of its 2000 Public Affairs Achievement Awards.

"It was difficult to pick the 'best of the best' because Â… the smallest degree separated the winners from those not selected," said Lt. Gen. Donald Cook, vice commander of Air Combat Command, when announcing the winners.

The winners are:

Unit Achievement Awards:

  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award, Large Wing: Air Warfare Center, Nellis AFB, Nev.; second place: 55th Wing, Offutt AFB, Neb.
  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award, Small Wing: 347th Wing, Moody AFB, Ga.; second place: 388th Fighter Wing, Hill AFB, Utah.
  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award For Media Relations: 49th FW, Holloman AFB, N.M.; second place: 1st FW, Langley AFB, Va.
  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award For Internal Information: 55th WG, Offutt AFB, Neb.; second place: 355th WG, Davis-Monthan AFB, Ariz.
  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award For Community Relations: 55th WG, Offutt AFB; second place: 49th FW, Holloman AFB.
  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award For Special Achievement In A Crisis Situation: 347th WG, Moody AFB, F-16/Cessna Crash; second place: 1st FW, Langley AFB, Sentinel Chicken Treatment.
  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award For Special Achievement, Planned Single Event: 1st FW, Langley AFB, Nascar/Air Force Promotion; second place: 552nd Air Control Wing, Tinker AFB, Okla., AWACS Media/Civic Leader Orientation Flight.
  • Public Affairs Director's Excellence Award For Community Involvement In Environmental Planning: 2nd Bomb Wing, Barksdale AFB, La.; second place: 366th WG, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho.

Outstanding Public Affairs People of the Year:

  • Field-grade officer: Maj. Eric Schnaible, 355th WG, Davis-Monthan AFB.
  • Company-grade officer: 1st Lt Allen Herritage, AWFC, Nellis AFB.
  • Senior-grade civilian: Michael Estrada, AWFC, Nellis AFB.
  • Intermediate-grade civilian: Joseph Garcia, 49th FW, Holloman AFB.
  • Senior NCO: Master Sgt. David Reagan, 347th WG, Moody AFB.
  • NCO: Staff Sgt. Kelley Stewart, 347th WG, Moody AFB.
  • Airman: Senior Airman Pauline Orcutt, 509th BW, Whiteman AFB, Mo.
  • Host Nation Employee: Eduardo Lima, 65th Air Base Wing, Lajes Field, Portugal.
  • Reserve Component Officer: Capt. Donna Gindle, 366th WG, Mountain Home AFB.
  • Public Affairs Special Achievement Award For Commander Support: Brig. Gen. Gregory Power, 55th WG, Offutt AFB.
  • Outstanding Contribution To Public Affairs Programs: Airman 1st Class Desiree Ortiz, 509th BW, Whiteman AFB.

Outstanding Public Affairs Band People of the Year:

  • Senior NCO: Senior Master Sgt. Jon Yates, U.S. Air Force Heartland Of America Band, Offutt AFB.
  • NCO: Staff Sgt. Stephen Shininger, U.S. Air Force Heartland Of America Band, Offutt AFB. Airman: Senior Airman Kenneth Drefke, U.S. Air Force Heartland Of America Band, Offutt AFB.

The first-place winners have been forwarded to compete in the Air Force-level competition.
