Columbia had been at Palmdale for 17 months for systems upgrades and modifications, including new all-glass cockpit panels.

Columbia's sister shuttle, Atlantis, also was being ferried across country after completing its recent mission to the International Space Station. Atlantis, which landed at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., after bad weather prevented it from landing in Florida, stopped at Altus Air Force Base, Okla., atop its shuttle carrier aircraft March 1. This marked the first time NASA had transported two shuttles simultaneously.
