Epstein: The Silences and the Screams

January 30, 2026, will remain the date when a “tabloid story” mutated into a generalized state crisis. With the declassification of 3 million pages by the US justice system, Pandora’s box has opened, unleashing a brutal and discordant symphony. On one side, the screams: the shattering fall of Lord Mandelson in London, the political turmoil surrounding Jack Lang in Paris, and the security alarm ringing in Berlin. On the other, the silences: the diplomatic omertà of Moscow, Beijing, and the Gulf, as heavy with meaning as the revelations themselves. Here is the anatomy of a week where the Western world discovered, with horror, the true extent of the trap set by Jeffrey Epstein.

Press Review from January 30 to February 6, 2026

On January 30, 2026, the US Department of Justice released over 3 million pages of documents relating to the Jeffrey Epstein affair, including 180,000 images and 2,000 videos.[01]

This massive publication follows the adoption, in November 2025, of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, passed by an overwhelming bipartisan majority (427-1 in the House, unanimous in the Senate) and signed by President Donald Trump.[02]

These revelations triggered an unprecedented international shockwave, hitting several Western countries simultaneously. The European and American press extensively covered the political, diplomatic, and security implications of these documents.

This press review analyzes the reactions in the main countries concerned between January 30 and February 6, 2026.

United Kingdom: Major Open Government Crisis

The Peter Mandelson Scandal

The United Kingdom is facing its gravest political crisis linked to the Epstein affair.[03] Peter Mandelson, former British Ambassador to Washington appointed in December 2024 by Prime Minister Keir Starmer, finds himself at the heart of a scandal threatening the stability of the Labour government.

The documents from January 30 reveal that Mandelson maintained close relations with Epstein well after the latter’s 2008 conviction. Even more serious, new elements suggest that Mandelson allegedly transmitted sensitive confidential information to Epstein during the financial crisis of 2008-2010, while he held the post of Business Secretary in Gordon Brown’s government.[04][05]

The most compromising leaks include:

  • Emails from May 2010 where Mandelson informs Epstein of the imminent announcement of a €500 billion European bailout plan, hours before its official publication.[06]
  • Exchanges from December 2009 regarding the windfall tax on bankers’ bonuses, where Mandelson suggests Epstein “mildly threaten” Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling.[6]
  • A message from May 2010 announcing the resignation of Prime Minister Gordon Brown before its official announcement (“Finally got him to go today”).[07]
  • Evidence of payments totaling $75,000 made to Mandelson between 2003 and 2004, as well as money transfers ($10,000 to $13,000) to his partner (now husband) Reinaldo da Silva to fund osteopathy courses.[08][09]

Political Consequences

The timeline of events testifies to the scale of the crisis:

  • February 2: Mandelson resigns from the Labour Party.[10]
  • February 3: The Metropolitan Police opens a criminal investigation for “misconduct in public office,” punishable by a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.[11]
  • February 4: Mandelson announces his retirement from the House of Lords, effective the following day.[12]
  • February 4-5: Heated debates in the Commons, where Starmer characterizes Mandelson’s behavior as “inexcusable and unpatriotic” and acknowledges that Mandelson “lied repeatedly to my team” regarding his relationship with Epstein.[13]
  • February 5: Starmer issues a public apology to Epstein’s victims for appointing Mandelson.[14]

In his speech on February 5 in Hastings, Keir Starmer stated: “I am sorry for what was done to you, I am sorry that so many people in positions of power abandoned you. I am sorry for believing Mandelson’s lies and for appointing him.”[14] This stance comes as Starmer’s own position is weakened, with persistent rumors of internal contestation within the Labour Party.[03]

The Conservative opposition, led by Kemi Badenoch, exploited the scandal to attack the Prime Minister’s judgment, claiming he had “injected poison” into the government.[03] Reform UK, through its deputy leader Richard Tice, suggested Starmer would be “very lucky” to survive politically until May 2026.[03]

The Royal Family Also Tainted

Documents also reveal new compromising information regarding ex-Prince Andrew (now Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor) and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson. Photos show Andrew in what appears to be Epstein’s New York residence, and exchanges suggest attempts by Epstein to introduce Andrew to a woman described as “26, Russian, smart, beautiful, trustworthy.”[15] Ferguson allegedly received $150,000 from Epstein in 2001 to help her liquidate Weight Watchers stock options.[15] Her charitable foundation “Sarah’s Trust” announced its closure on February 2 “for the foreseeable future.”[15]

France: Jack Lang and the Crisis at the Arab World Institute

Revelations on Jack Lang The name Jack Lang appears 673 times in the documents published on January 30.[16][17] The former Minister of Culture (1981-1986 and 1988-1993) under François Mitterrand and current President of the Arab World Institute (IMA) since 2013 is implicated in several types of relationships with Epstein:

Business Relations:

  • Regular use of Epstein’s planes and cars (April 2015, April 2017, September 2017).[18]
  • Transmission to Epstein in March 2015 of information on a riad in Marrakech (“Ksar Masa”) for sale for €5.4 million via an offshore structure.[18][19]
  • Invitation of Epstein to Parisian cultural events, including the symposium for the 30th anniversary of the Louvre Pyramid in March 2019 (three months before Epstein’s final arrest).[18]
  • Facilitation of contacts with Emmanuel Macron’s staff.[[18]

The Caroline Lang Case

Jack Lang’s daughter, Caroline, is also mentioned in the documents for direct financial ties with Epstein:[20]

  • Creation in 2016 of an offshore company, Prytanee LLC, domiciled in the US Virgin Islands, of which Caroline Lang held 50% of the shares and Epstein 100% of the capital.[20]
  • Accounts credited with $1.4 million for the purchase of artworks.[20]
  • Mention in Epstein’s will (signed two days before his death) for a bequest of $5 million, of which Caroline Lang claims never to have had knowledge.[20]
  • Provision of Epstein’s villa in Palm Beach in 2014 for Caroline Lang and her two daughters.[18]

Reactions and Consequences

  • February 2: Caroline Lang resigns from her position as General Delegate of the Union of Independent Producers (SPI), which she had held for only three weeks. In a statement, she declares she does not wish “under any circumstances for this situation to weaken or harm the union.”[21]
  • February 3-4: Jack Lang multiplies media interventions (France 2, BFMTV, RTL) to defend himself.[16][22] He claims to have met Epstein through Woody Allen “about fifteen years ago” and states he was “stunned” (tombé de l’armoire) to discover his crimes.[16] He asserts he “cut short” any relationship “immediately” after becoming aware of the allegations against Epstein. However, a photograph dated March 2019 shows him with Epstein near the Louvre, contradicting this claim.[22]
  • February 5: Calls for resignation multiply, including within his own political family. Olivier Faure, First Secretary of the Socialist Party, declares to franceinfo: “At this stage, nothing implicates Jack Lang in sexual scandals, but he must reflect on his resignation to protect the institution he presides over.”[23] Ségolène Royal regrets that “Jack Lang is not more indignant than that about having frequented such a character.”[24]
  • February 6: Under pressure from the Élysée and Matignon, Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot summons Jack Lang to the Quai d’Orsay for Sunday, February 8.[25] Emmanuel Macron’s entourage indicates that Lang should “think of the institution” of the IMA.[26] Nevertheless, Jack Lang categorically refuses to resign from the presidency of the Arab World Institute.[22]

Other French Figures Mentioned

  • Bruno Le Maire (Minister of Economy and Finance 2017-2024): Appears in emails via his former advisor Olivier Colom. In September 2013, Colom presents Le Maire as a “future 2017 presidential candidate” and solicits Epstein’s help for a meeting with investment bankers. Le Maire allegedly quickly left Epstein’s residence after understanding the nature of the meeting.[18]
  • Cédric Villani (Mathematician, MP for Essonne): Receives an email in October 2017 from “Jeffrey” introducing himself as an expert in “money, digital currencies,” inviting him for a “coffee” on Avenue Foch. Villani went to the appointment without knowing it was Epstein.[18]
  • Michel Hazanavicius (Director, The Artist): Meets Epstein in May 2012 via an introduction for dinner with Woody Allen. Epstein proposes in June 2012 to find him “a very beautiful but smart girl” to accompany him to a Parisian premiere. Hazanavicius declines and distances himself.[18]
  • Frédéric Chaslin (Conductor): Frequented Epstein between 2013 and 2019 with his wife, hoping to finance an opera. An email from September 2013 mentions having “found a wonderful girl” of 21 as a translator, which Chaslin firmly disputes on social media.[18]

Germany: Security Concerns and Calls for Action

The German reaction is characterized by an approach that is more security-oriented than political. Several parliamentarians from different parties have called for a systematic analysis of the documents from a national security perspective.[27][28]

The Deutsche Bank Scandal: Raids and Revelations In troubling timing, on January 28, 2026—two days before the release of the Epstein files by the DOJ—the German Federal Police conducted spectacular raids on Deutsche Bank premises in Frankfurt and Berlin.[41][42]

  • About 30 plainclothes investigators entered the bank’s headquarters in Frankfurt shortly after 9:00 AM GMT.[42]
  • The Frankfurt prosecutor’s office is investigating “unidentified officials and employees of Deutsche Bank on suspicion of money laundering” regarding transactions occurring between 2013 and 2018.[41][42]
  • According to several media outlets, including Süddeutsche Zeitung and Der Spiegel, the investigation focuses on business relationships with companies linked to Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, now under European sanctions.[42][43]

Cover of Der Spiegel, Feb 6, 2026

Couverture du Spiegel du 6.2.2026

The Abramovich-Epstein-Deutsche Bank LinkFortune reveals that the 2013-2018 period targeted by German investigators “corresponds precisely to Deutsche Bank’s relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.”[43] During these years, the bank opened over 40 accounts for Epstein and his entities, processing millions of dollars in suspicious transactions.[44] This complacency cost Deutsche Bank:

  • $75 million in compensation to Epstein victims (2023) [44]
  • $150 million fine from the New York regulator [44]
  • $26.25 million as part of a shareholder class action regarding both Epstein and Abramovich [44]

The Fortune article of January 30, 2026, highlights the bitter irony: while CEO Christian Sewing announced on January 29 the bank’s highest annual profit in nearly twenty years ($8.5 billion), the raid scandal totally eclipsed this performance.[43]

Calls for Investigation

Konstantin von Notz (Greens, Vice-Chairman of the parliamentary group and member of the Parliamentary Control Panel for Intelligence Services) stated to Handelsblatt: “German prosecutors should carefully examine the Epstein files and, if necessary, request additional information from US authorities.”[27][28] He demands clarification from the federal government on “to what extent German intelligence services and other security authorities had knowledge” of Epstein’s acts and the associated “exploitation, criminal or pedo-criminal networks.”[28]

Marc Henrichmann (CDU, Chairman of the Intelligence Control Committee) emphasized to Handelsblatt: “High-level decision-makers from society, the economy, and politics were apparently involved in Epstein’s vile machinations.”[27][28] He insists that these revelations offer “considerable potential for compromise and blackmail” (erhebliches Kompromittierungs- und Erpressungspotenzial).[27] He asks for an examination of whether these connections could have influenced decisions “to the detriment of the security of Germany and Europe.”[28]

Sebastian Fiedler (SPD, spokesperson for domestic affairs) considers German links possible: “Given the numerous ramifications in European power circles, it is by no means excluded that ramifications could also exist towards Germany.”[27][28] He mentions a possible “intelligence service dimension” and refers to suspicions expressed by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk regarding a possible Russian influence operation.[27][28]

The Joscha Bach Case German AI researcher Joscha Bach admitted on February 4 to having received funding for years from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) originating from Epstein, intended for his AI research.[29] This case illustrates how Epstein bought proximity to cutting-edge research to acquire social prestige and access intellectual elites. A 2017 email reveals that Bach allegedly wrote to a protégé that Epstein did not seem to particularly like women, but was attracted to them “as long as they are not too feminine”—a phrasing that sparked outrage.[30]

Perspective of the German Press

Handelsblatt headlines on February 6: “Erhebliches Erpressungspotenzial – Neue Epstein-Enthüllungen alarmieren die deutsche Politik” (Considerable Blackmail Potential – New Epstein Revelations Alarm German Politics).[27] The article highlights that the affair concerns not only individual contacts but raises the fundamental question of whether the Epstein network exercised political or economic influence.Watson.ch (Swiss German media) published an article on February 2 titled “Was die neuen Epstein-Files enthüllen – und wie es nun weitergeht” (What the new Epstein files reveal – and how it continues), highlighting that at least 4,500 documents mention Donald Trump and that extreme allegations are circulating, though unverified.[31]

United States: Polarizations and Narrative Battles

Controversy Surrounding the Publication

Illustration générée par AI diffusée sur X

The publication of the documents was marked by several technical and political controversies:[01][32]

  • Redaction Errors: The Department of Justice accidentally published dozens of unredacted photos showing young women, potentially minors, with their faces visible. These images were largely removed after The New York Times alerted the DOJ.[01]
  • Exposure of Victim Names: At least 43 full names of victims were exposed, of which more than two dozen were minors at the time of the abuse. Some names appear over 100 times.[32]

AI Illustration on X

Attorneys Brad Edwards and Brittany Henderson provided the DOJ on December 4 with a list of 350 victims to ensure their names were redacted. They claim the DOJ did not perform a simple keyword search to verify its redaction process, resulting in “literally thousands of errors.”[32]

American Figures Implicated

  • Elon Musk: Documents reveal exchanges showing that in January 2013, Musk asked Epstein when they should head to his island (“When should we head to your island on the 2nd?”).[01] Musk previously denied any participation in “Epstein parties” and attempted to link his political opponents to Epstein. On January 31, he attacked Reid Hoffman on X (Twitter): “Big difference: you went there multiple times.”[01]
  • Reid Hoffman (LinkedIn co-founder, ex-OpenAI partner): Acknowledges interacting with Epstein after his conviction, stating “I deeply regret” and claiming to have known him only as a “fundraising executive for MIT.” Documents show a planned visit to the New Mexico ranch, which Hoffman denies.[01]
  • Bill Gates: Emails from 2013, allegedly unsent, contain troubling grievances. Gates responded to Nine News: “The email is fake, I don’t know what went through his head. I regret every minute, I apologize. Never went to the island, never met those women.” Photos in the file show him at Epstein’s in New York and next to a young woman in an unknown location.[18]
Donald Trump le 3 février 2026 — Cépture d'écran ® Europena6Security
Donald Trump did everything to block the release of these documents, breaking his campaign pledges…
  • Donald Trump: At least 4,500 documents mention Trump.[31] An FBI memo compiles citizen allegations regarding Trump and Epstein.[31] An FBI interview note from mid-2021 reports that a victim stated Ghislaine Maxwell had “introduced” her to Trump at a party, suggesting she was “available.” According to the memo, “nothing happened” between her and Trump.[01] Neither Trump nor Clinton have ever been charged in connection with Epstein, and authorities have produced no evidence of wrongdoing.[33]

American Media Analysis

CNN (February 3) analyzes: “The torrent of scandals unleashed by the Epstein files could at least temporarily help Trump, who has been under scrutiny over what he knew. The president has always maintained that America was run by a corrupt cabal of devious elites dominating politics, finance, and the arts. The more voters conclude that the entire establishment is corrupt, the less Trump’s own volatile conduct and questionable ethics seem to make him an exception.”[34]

Democratic Representative Ro Khanna, who helped force the release of the files, told NBC’s Meet the Press: “You have some of the wealthiest individuals, tech leaders, financial leaders, politicians, all involved in some way, having emailed him, wanting to go to Epstein’s island, knowing that Epstein was a pedophile.”[34]

Other Countries Affected (Hit but Not Sunk)

Norway

  • Thorbjørn Jagland (former Prime Minister of Norway and former Secretary General of the Council of Europe): Documents show evidence of meetings and communications with Epstein. A message alleges Jagland would be on “the island for the whole of next week.”[35] Jagland resigned on January 31 from his position as national security advisor to Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.[02]
  • Børge Brende (President of the World Economic Forum in Davos, former Norwegian minister): The WEF announced on February 4 an “independent review” of its ties with Epstein, including his participation in “three business dinners with Jeffrey Epstein as well as subsequent email and SMS communications.”[36]
  • Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway: Revealed to have exchanged private emails for years with the convicted sex offender.[36]

India

  • Anil Ambani (Billionaire Chairman of Reliance Group, close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi): Documents reveal correspondence since 2012 regarding topics ranging from evaluating new US ambassadors to India to organizing meetings for Modi with high-ranking US officials.[37] On March 16, 2017, Ambani sent a message to Epstein asking for help connecting the “Leadership” with Jared Kushner and Steve Bannon.[37]
  • The Indian Ministry of External Affairs rejected insinuations regarding Modi as “little more than the sordid ruminations of a convicted criminal, deserving to be treated with the utmost contempt.”[37]

Slovakia

  • Miroslav Lajčák (National security advisor to Prime Minister Robert Fico, former President of the UN General Assembly): Resigned on January 31, 2026, following a joint statement by opposition politicians and growing media pressure.[02]

The Revealing Silences: He Who Says Nothing…

While revelations wash over Europe and the United States, several geographic and political zones remain remarkably silent. These absences of reaction, in countries nonetheless directly concerned by Epstein’s networks, constitute significant information in themselves.

Israel: A Deafening Silence

No significant media coverage or official reaction has been identified in Israel, despite persistent allegations regarding Epstein’s ties to the Mossad.[45] Yet the published documents mention:

  • Documented relations between Epstein and Ehud Barak, former Israeli Prime Minister (2008-2009) and former IDF Chief of Staff. Photos show Barak entering Epstein’s New York residence in 2016.[45]
  • Connections with Ghislaine Maxwell, whose father Robert Maxwell was an alleged Mossad agent according to several historical sources.[45]
  • Questions regarding Epstein’s possible role as an “asset” for Israeli intelligence services, a hypothesis mentioned in your Epstein-Russia synthesis. This total absence of public debate contrasts sharply with media and political treatment in other Western democracies.

Arab Countries: Diplomatic Omertà

Gulf countries, though indirectly mentioned in documents via Kushner-Epstein connections and suspicious financial flows, have produced no official reaction. Several observations:[45]

  • The UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, which invested massively in Affinity Partners (Jared Kushner’s fund) after 2021, remain mute despite questions raised by documents on Kushner-Epstein ties.
  • No public inquiry has been announced regarding possible Arab nationals mentioned in the files.
  • State-controlled media in these countries have largely ignored the affair, except for brief dispatches from international agencies. This discretion is likely explained by the diplomatic sensitivity of the subject and the desire to avoid any public association with the scandal.

Russia: Strategic Silence

Moscow has issued no official comment on the revelations, despite numerous mentions of Russian connections in the documents:[45]

  • 1,056 references to Vladimir Putin and 9,629 mentions of Moscow in the files.[45]
  • Allegations concerning Sergei Belyakov (FSB Academy graduate, former Deputy Minister of Economic Development).[45]
  • Suspicions of a “honeytrap” operation orchestrated by the KGB/FSB raised by several European media outlets.[39]

This lack of official reaction could reflect either a strategy of denial or a desire not to draw attention to sensitive operations.

China: Media Non-Existence

No coverage identified in Chinese media, despite economic interests and international influence networks potentially affected. The strict control of information by Beijing likely explains this total blackout.[45]

7. Cross-Cutting Themes and Analysis

The Question of Blackmail and Espionage A recurring theme in international media coverage concerns the potential for espionage and blackmail associated with the Epstein network. Several European media outlets have picked up the hypothesis of an intelligence operation:

  • The British Daily Mail (February 1), citing “US and allied intelligence sources,” evokes a classic “honeytrap” operation.[38]
  • Françoise Thom’s article (July 2025) “The Cesspool and the Chaos: The Russian Connection to the Epstein Affair” poses the question: does the FSB hold a “list” of Epstein clients?
  • Heute.at (Austria, February 2) headlines: “‘Weltweit größte Honigfalle’ – Neue Enthüllungen: Handelte Epstein im Auftrag des KGB?” (“The World’s Largest Honeytrap” – New Revelations: Did Epstein Act on KGB Orders?).[39]
  • Several German parliamentarians mention “considerable potential for compromise and blackmail” (erhebliches Kompromittierungs- und Erpressungspotenzial).[27][28]

However, it should be noted that a July 2025 DOJ memo asserted that a “client list” did not exist and that there was “no credible evidence of blackmail by Epstein.”[38] This position contrasts with subsequent revelations and persistent questions.

Volume and Complexity of Data International media highlight the unprecedented scale of this release:[1]

  • Over 3 million pages of documents.
  • 180,000 images.
  • 2,000 videos.
  • About 200,000 pages were redacted or withheld based on various privileges (attorney-client privilege, deliberative privilege).[01] According to a DOJ letter to Judge Paul A. Engelmayer in early January 2026, less than 1% of the files had been made public by that date. The DOJ acknowledges that a total of 6 million pages could eventually be qualified as files to be published.[02]

Insufficient Protection of Victims A major theme of criticism in the international press concerns the disastrous management of victim protection:[32]

  • Wall Street Journal: At least 43 full names of victims exposed, including over two dozen minors at the time of the abuse.[32]
  • Some names appear over 100 times.
  • Personal addresses visible in keyword searches.
  • Victims’ lawyers denounce “literally thousands of errors” in the redaction process.[32] Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged during a press conference on January 30 that “errors are inevitable” and encouraged anyone spotting problems to contact a dedicated DOJ email address.[01]

Absence of New Prosecutions The US DOJ clearly indicated that no new charges would be brought based on the Epstein files.[40] This decision was criticized by several observers who believe that the mere publication of documents without active investigation amounts to abandoning the victims. Only Ghislaine Maxwell was prosecuted and convicted (in 2021) for her role as an accomplice in Epstein’s sex trafficking.[33]

Conclusion

The publication of the Epstein files on January 30, 2026, triggered a major political crisis in the United Kingdom, significant controversy in France, and calls for security action in Germany. Several trends emerge from this international press review:

  • Asymmetry of Consequences: While the UK experiences a government crisis with resignations and criminal investigations, and France sees growing pressure on historical political figures, the US has seen no major political or judicial consequences despite the involvement of numerous American figures.
  • Emerging Security Dimension: Germany and several other European countries are now treating the Epstein affair not just as a sex scandal, but as a potential national security issue, with questions about possible espionage and blackmail operations.
  • Failure of Victim Protection: The US DOJ’s catastrophic management of redaction exposed dozens of victims, including minors, revealing institutional disregard for their protection.
  • Narrative Polarization: In the US, the affair is politically weaponized by both sides, each seeking to demonstrate the corruption of the other camp rather than establishing factual truth.
  • Geography of Silence: The absences of reaction (Israel, Arab countries, Russia, China) are as revealing as the scandals erupting in Western Europe. These silences suggest either implications too sensitive to be acknowledged, or information control preventing any public debate.
  • Unresolved Questions: Despite 3 million pages published, fundamental questions remain: Did Epstein work for intelligence services? Who really controlled his operations? Where are the blackmail materials? Who else was involved in the abuse?

The shockwave of these revelations continues to propagate across the Western world, with political, diplomatic, and security consequences that are only beginning to manifest. The period from January 30 to February 6, 2026, marks a turning point in the public perception of the scale and gravity of this affair.

Decryption: The Institutional Domino Effect

As this week has demonstrated, the Western political chessboard has been overturned. What we are observing is no longer a simple accumulation of private vices, but a systemic institutional explosion. From 10 Downing Street, now weakened, to the corridors of the Quai d’Orsay, passing through the headquarters of Frankfurt finance, the shockwave ignored borders. This week’s “press review” proves that the exposure of Epstein’s networks acts like acid on elite credibility: it does not merely dissolve individual reputations; it attacks trust in the very governance of States.

The Security Mutation: Beyond the political crash, a darker reality imposes itself for the weeks to come: the affair has definitively mutated.
