Pardoned U.S. Spy Stops in Germany Before Returning Home
Ramstein Air Base, Germany -- December 14, 2000 -(AFPN) -- Edmond Pope (center), the American businessman convicted of spying by the Russian government, arrived here Dec. 14 following his release from prison.

The 54-year-old retired Navy officer was to receive a medical evaluation at nearby Landstuhl Regional Medical Center before returning to the United States. Pope, accompanied on the trip home by his wife, Cheri, and Rep. John E. Peterson, R-Pa., was pardoned from a 20-year prison sentence for espionage by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
